Wow! I’ve just spent an awesome few days at the Professional Builder “Under 40 Executive Summit” in Newport Beach. Being in a room filled with the Building Industry’s young leaders was not just inspirational but also very impressive! I got to meet with so many great builders from around the country… Toll Brothers, Stanton Homes, Orleans Homes, Southern Custom Homes, Conaway Homes, Standard Pacific Homes, McKee Builders and so many more.

The event started out with a leading speaker for TED talks, Andy Stefanovich. Andy is a business advisor for major companies like CocaCola and Walt Disney, and he offers a unique perspective on how to approach business. He challenged our group to apply “intentional thoughtfulness” to our businesses as well as to think about how we can be “purposefully disruptive”.  I love the idea of purposeful disruption… isn’t that such a great way to think about marketing?!  His one point that really stood out to me is that “Passion is Persuasive.”  That is just so true. Passion can’t be faked. It’s in your eyes… it’s in your mannerisms… and it’s in your voice.  I would love to challenge everyone reading this to think about how YOUR passion comes across in your sales and marketing presentations.

We also heard from Seth Ring of the Southern California Division of Toll Brothers, Dave Kosco from the architecture firm Bassenian Lagoni, and Mollie Carmichael with John Burns Real Estate Company’s Custom Consulting practice. All were incredibly insightful.

The amazing Larry Webb, founder and CEO for The New Home Company, shared some of his industry secrets. I’m not going to share them here, but I can tell you that if you missed this event… you surely missed out. He was truly inspiring and I took about four pages of notes!

I will leave you with the one thing he said that has stuck with me: “Building homes is noble work.”  So simple, yet so true. We get pulled into the day-to-day of what we do, and we can lose perspective. The truth is that building a home for someone is an amazing honor.  I’ve never built anything other than a sandcastle in my life, but being able to be a part of this industry and have a small part helping builders connect with their buyers is truly humbling.

Thank you to Professional Builder. “Wow!” is an understatement.
