Facebook remains on the cutting edge of social innovation as they roll out their new cover video feature in their latest update. The days of static images limiting your business profile aesthetics and engagement are over.
According to eMarketer, more than 62% of the world’s internet users will view digital video in 2017, and that number is expected to grow. Video is becoming the most devoured content on social media, so it only makes sense that cover videos are here. Time to get moving!
Facebook tested out the new feature with a few lucky profiles, and is slowly rolling it out for all users. Here are some tips on how to use the new feature correctly, so you’ll be prepared to take advantage of the update when it’s here – and wow your followers as one of the first to do so!
- Size the cover video correctly
- The wrong size could look very unprofessional, very fast. Follow Facebook’s recommended size of 820 x 462 pixels.
- For example: The improperly sized cover video below resulted in a bubblegum pink background that takes us back to the vintage HTML websites/Myspace profiles of 2007:
- Make it interesting
- It’s not recommended to use a lengthy employee interview (Facebook actually doesn’t allow anything longer than 90 seconds, and no shorter than 20 seconds).
- Show off your product/business in a fun, moving way. Have a family jumping for joy in front of a popular model home, or show a member of your construction team hard at work on a new home.
- Add captions
- The cover video plays automatically when a person visits your profile, but on mute. The person can choose to enable sound, but that won’t always happen. If your video is more comprehensive with a message, make sure you include a video caption or subtitles.
- If there is no message at all, you can include your company logo or brand the video in a unique way.
- Think GIFS and Boomerangs
- Keep in mind that the cover video plays on a loop! Try to end your video the same way it started. This will eliminate any awkward skips when the video loops around.
- Keep it on brand
- Remember that the cover video is still the welcome section of your Facebook business page – one of the first things a visitor sees.
- The cover video should be a 20 to 90 second clip that represents what your company stands for, what your company does, and/or how your customer will benefit from your services.
- Your cover video also provides a new, original way to highlight an upcoming event such as a Grand Opening or Open House, or creates a visual message of life in your homes as the seasons change. Tap into what’s relevant to your buyers at the time, and grab their attention as soon as they visit your page.
